Although Mary Anne is middle-aged and approaching old age, she believes you are as old as you act. The main female protagonist in the Charlie McClung Mysteries is an interesting snapshot of the author's sensibilities.

Tired of the stress in a big city police job, and having ended his latest attempt at romance, Detective Charlie McClung takes a position in a much smaller community. He is the "new guy" at the police station and the only one who is not from the area. This story takes place before digital cameras and cell phones.

Marian Selby is a young, retired widow who is satisfied with her life, even though she has few close friends.
She has suffered loss, including the deaths of her parents and her pilot husband, and is afraid to open her heart to any relationship that could possibly end in that much pain again. She does not even want a pet.

She is home, minding her own business, when she hears a loud noice, perhaps a gunshot, followed by screaming.
All the noise is coming from next door, the home of one of her dear friends. Before she can get outside, a crowd has formed and the police are on the scene. Being frantic, Marian pushes towards the police banner and ambulance.
She discovers it is indeed her dear friend Dianne who is being taken away.

A detective is canvassing the crowd, asking if anyone heard or saw anything that could be useful in the investigation. Marian speaks to him and invites him back to her house after he has spoken with the others.
Marian is an avid reader and amateur sleuth. She also wants to know if he learned anything after speaking to everyone else. This meeting is not for romance, but from the start we notice an energy that seems to be calling these two together. Sadly, when he does arrive and calls the hospital for an update, we learn Dianne has died.

A well written mystery with enough characters holding secrets that we are not sure until very near the end who the best suspects are. Along with the mystery and the budding romance between McClung and Marian, there is a foodie element to this book. Something for everyone. I also liked the secondary characters and hope we meet them again in future books in this series.

I was given an ecopy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
I look forward to reading more in this series.

REVIEW
Marian is a widowed woman living alone and although she has a fulfilled life. Her best friend thinks she needs to move on after so many years of being alone.

Her neighbor who is a younger married woman with a little girl age 5 has been shot dead in her home and Marian just doesn’t think things are adding up. They are saying she died of self inflicted gunshot but Marian does not believe it.

The new detective in town Charlie McClung is on the case or not?
Charlie moved away from his home town of the big city to a smaller rural town thinking things would be easier but what has he gotten himself into?

One thing Charlie and Marian know is that their search for the truth has brought them closer together
and ignited feelings between them.

Will this last between them? Will they figure out who caused the death of Marians’ neighbor?
And can Charlie keep Marian safe?

New to me author and I will definitely read the next books in this series when they are out. The book kept me intrigued and the suspense is really good and the romance is very subtle. The story and characters flow very well. It’s like your playing along with the game clue.

I was gifted a copy of this book for my honest review and I also downloaded it via Kindle Unlimited

This is a good start to what I hope will be a good series. Marian is a 47 yr young woman (I refuse to say old cause I'm only a few years away) who lost her husband 11 years ago. One night Charlie walks into her life when he is investigating a death next door. Little does Marian know...but her life is about to change forever.

This book has mystery, intrigue, Christian beliefs, the start of romance, laughter and lots of tears....from Marian...not me. she cried... A LOT!!!! I think once a chapter or every other chapter...she was crying. A lil too much for me...but I guess we are blaming it on pre menopause.

This book is based in the 1980's...don't remember exactly what year.

Written as a multi pov which I love.

My least favorite part was the epilogue. It was a half page synopsis of what happened to the bad guys. Yes, I wanted to know what happened to them, but it could have been written differently...maybe a newspaper article or Charlie telling Marian about what was happening.

Would I recommend this book: Yes if you want a soft mystery.

Would I read more from this author: Yes, I want to see if Charlie takes over the chief job.

What does one do when your beloved husband is killed in a plane crash (11 years ago), your parents die, you move to a new neighborhood where you have one friend and one almost younger sister and one of them is killed? Of course, you team up with the new policeman and try to solve the – suicide?? What is going on in this place? Who can you trust? Reminder to me, ALWAYS keep my guns close at hand!
I enjoyed reading this book very much and I am being a good girl and impatiently waiting for the next book in the series.

Brilliant Disguise is a story about Marian Selby's neighbor's death. Although it is quickly written off as a suicide Marian will not let it go and drafts the help of Lyman County's newest police detective Charlie McClung. Soon the two of them are not only trying to solve this murder mystery in secrecy due to a police cover up but they are also becoming emotionally closer to one another. Both have been alone for a long time and are reluctant to take that next step. But as they get closer to who done it, they ultimately fall for each other as well.

This book reminded me of Angela Lansbury from Murder She Wrote, it is tastefully set, timeless and reminds me of times when chivalry was still around, but is also set in 1982 (which I lost site of till a VCR was mentioned later on). I loved the two main characters and found I had a connection with both. I can't wait to read the next one.

Brilliant Disguise is book 1 in the Charlie McClung Mysteries series by Mary Anne Edwards.

This was a different kind of mystery than I'm used to reading due to the fact that the main characters are more mature...they're in their late 40's. Which as someone that is approaching that "maturity level" I can appreciate. Although they acted so much like grown ups that I questioned my own maturity level a couple of times but then I just accepted that I'm immature for my age and moved on.

I think that featuring main characters that are a little older allowed the author to add a bit of depth and perspective to the story. Life experience counts for a lot and both the main characters were able to draw on theirs to help solve the mystery that they are involved in. So, yay for "older" characters.

Charlie McClung is the detective. I liked him from the start. He has charisma and shows respect towards others. Two points that score high on my "what a guy!" rating scale. He is burned out from working the big crime scenes in the city so he moves to Georgia and accepts a position as detective in a small town police department.

Mirian is 47 years old, widowed, and trying to move forward without the love of her life. She enjoys a great mystery and can't help but think that something is amiss when her young next door neighbor dies. It took me a little while to warm up to Mirian because she came across as prim, proper, and a little stiff but as the story progressed she grew on me. Her spunk started to show and I enjoyed her analytical way of thinking.

The story is told in 3rd person narration with shifting points of view. This gives the reader an opportunity to get a birds eye view of the crime elements but at the same time learn more about Charlie and Mirian as they explore their relationship.

This next sentence is going to give you a hint at where I fall on that 40's age group scale so don't be shocked.

I was a HUGE fan of Scarecrow and Mrs. King, Hart to Hart, and my favorite Remington Steele.  Brilliant Disguise had a similar feel to as those mystery/romance TV shows that I loved. I think the combination of clean dialogue, solid mystery, romantic sparks, and the bad guys getting what they deserve at the end is what makes Brilliant Disguise an enjoyable and satisfying read.

Overall: Brilliant Disguise was an enjoyable read with plenty of heart. Mirian is learning to move with her life after eleven years of widowhood. There is a acceptance and growth mixed in with action and intrigue. I hope to be able to read A Good Girl, book 2 in the series soon.

Brilliant Disguise is a murder mystery and romance, hence the title 2 for 1. This story is about Marian and a new Detective in town, McClung, trying to solve a murder that happened to one of Marian's good friends next door. The action starts in the first chapter, literally within the first few pages. I find that nice in a mystery. Who wants to wait forever for the good stuff to start happening? I thought this book had a very good story and could tell the author new enough about the content to make it sound intelligent. I felt the author provided excellent character development, not only with the 2 main characters, but with the sub characters as well. By the end of the book I truly felt like I knew these people. As the book continues and McClung and Marian are sure there is something fishy going on, they start working together. Marian is relentless in trying to find things out, and as the story moves on Detective Charlie"McClung", becomes just "Charlie" as a romance began to bloom. Marian struggles with her feelings for Charlie. As a widow she feels guilt, even after 11 years. My favorite philosophical part, the part that really made me think was when Marian was having a hard time moving on from her guilt and grief, and it says
"The sound of her blood pumping from her pounding heart drummed inside her ears. Other sounds filtered in. Marian could hear birds singing and bees humming as they continued to dance around the flowers. From a few doors over, she heard children splashing around in water. She even heard a distant train's mournful whistle. It was life. Life continued all around her, unsympathetic to her suffering." It just really makes you think, no matter what is going on in your life....murder, accidental death causing you to be a widow, or the fear of falling in love again, life continues to move on with or without you. I think that was one of the first moments she started to realize it was time to let go. The murder mystery aspect of the story goes on throughout the whole book, making you change your mind several times on who the "real" killer could be, but as the near ended and the final battle pursued, you learn the killer and Charlie and Marian just might learn how to love each other. This was a great story that I would recommend to anyone who likes these types of mystery books. The only reason I gave it a 4 is because I felt it was a bit wordy. Sometimes things I already had read and didn't feel the need to read them 2 or 3 more times, or sometimes things that really just didn't need to be there at all for the story to be good. I do, however, look forward to book 2 in this series!

What a great read! Brilliant Disguise had everything a traditional mystery should, as well as a sweet romance that added an additional dimension to the story. Taking place in the 1980s, Brilliant Disguise also does a great job transporting you back to that time, when a cordless phone was as mobile as a phone got, and new neighbors were welcomed with a basket of homemade goodies.

Charlie and Miriam were just great together, giving each other just what they needed to let love in and start living. Miriam has experienced heartache and has had a hard time letting go of the past. Charlie would rather be alone than settle for a love that isn't as deep and meaningful as what he has seen between his parents and grandparents. And when a murder brings these two together it is just the catalyst that these two need to recognize that maybe everything they needed is right in front of their eyes.

They mystery itself was good and kept me guessing until close to the end just who was behind things. The characters were colorful, and the detail in the book about situations and places really drew me in as a reader. I really loved Miriam’s friend Joan, as well as the “computer geeks” down at the station. And it was fun to watch Charlie and Miriam’s feelings develop towards each other as the mystery unfolded around them, especially as the mystery started to unravel and danger sets in.

This was a great start to what looks to be the beginning of a fun new mystery series. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Edwards and seeing what she has in store next for Charlie and Miriam!

I received this book from the author for an honest review.

Brilliant Disguise was a wonderful book. Although not typically a mystery book reader this book has just the right amount of Romance too. Mary Anne Edwards is a terrific writer. I love all the details that she puts into the book it makes it seem like I were right there helping look for the clues. I am so happy to have read a book with older characters and adored Marian and Charlie falling in love. The suspense, mystery and love made this a 5 star review for me. I cannot wait for the next book.

Detective Charlie McClung moves to a small town, looking for a less complicated life. However, his very first case has all elements that make him wonder how a town is any different from a city.

A young wife, Dianne, is found shot dead. Before McClung can investigate, the Chief arrives and takes over the case. McClung meets a distraught neighbor, Marian, who swears that Dianne was murdered.

The Chief closes the case in quick time, declaring it a suicide. But Marian is insistent, and McClung finds too many clues to counter her. Can he solve the case before more lives are in danger? Is Marian at risk for actively working on the case with him?

What will happen to the budding relationship between McClung and Marian?

*Unpopular opinion*

The premise was intriguing, and the reviews were just as good. Categorized as thriller and women’s fiction, I hoped the book would have some strong elements of both genres.

What I got instead were a mediocre thriller and a surreal heroine. Or maybe it was just the writing that made Marian surreal.

To sum up, the book is neither a mystery nor a thriller. It could be a cozy mystery but not that interesting either. I still don’t know why the book is titled Brilliant Disguise. I can’t remotely connect it to the story. Or maybe it’s just me. It's clear that most people loved the book, and I'm a minority here.

The book does have a few good things. The pace is steady, and there is some action towards the end. I like Marian’s relationship with Joan and others. She’s sweet and loved by all, and of course, a terrific cook and baker.

Go with the least expectations and consider this a cozy mystery for beginners. You might enjoy it more than I did.

This murder mystery begins with two arresting sentences:

"Marian painted her face with dark green clay. Leaning toward the wide bathroom mirror, she made sure every bare spot was covered."

And as soon as I read them, I inwardly begged the author (please, please) to break the paragraph and just let this image hover! It's unsettling, even a bit macabre, isn't it-- this mundane act of concealment? And what follows highlights its importance: Hearing gunshots and screaming, Marian Selby hurriedly wipes off her mask and rushes outside, where she confronts both a tragic loss and a man she'll come to love.

But love wasn't her goal. She's holding herself together. Barely.

Marian Selby is gradually revealed as a very interesting character-- a well-heeled widow who staunches her grief with set routines, self-care, and the cultivation of order. Beautiful self, beautiful house, beautiful table, beautiful garden... She cares for others, too, volunteering for a special needs program, gifting cookies and roses to neighborhood children, and investing in a few close friendships.

For me, Brilliant Disguise's main pull was discovering what Marian will do when this protectively ordered world is rocked. It's all about the conflict between her deliberate perfection and that mess beyond her door, threatening to invade... The book's second half really delivers, offering a poignant scene (I cried!) and a terrifying climax.

Bottom line? This psychologically-driven mystery kept me reading! The writing is good, but (I think) could have been still better-- sharper, more focused-- so as to show off the story's fine bones. As this is only the first in a series of Charlie McClung novels, I look forward to picking up the next installment.

Marian Selby heard yelling and a gunshot next door, prompting her to run and see what may have become of her good friend and neighbor, Dianne. What she saw shocked her and suddenly brought out the past that haunted her. Death.

Detective Charlie McClung responded to the situation but was only informed that it was a suicide case. Charlie, being the new "fish" in the area after having moved into town two months ago, believed that there was a cover-up with the case. Marian Selby told him she personally knew the victim and that she would never take her own life. So something was definitely wrong in the scenario. Together, they worked to find out the truth and bring justice to Diane's murder.

Mysteries, suspense and thrillers have always been one of my favorite genre. And I love a good mystery when I feel a little down. This one from Mary Anne Edwards really perked me up right from the start. It made me stayed up at night until I get to the bottom of the case and rightly guessed the suspects.

Brilliant Disguised is really good! The characters are appealing, the plot was feasible, the pace was quick and the author was brilliant! This is the first of Mary Anne Edwards' work that I've read, and I am sure this won't be the last.

This is a mystery and a love story all rolled up into one. It starts off strong and keeps going to the last page. It grabbed my attention and I found it hard to put it down.

The story of Charlie and Marian is one that I find myself rooting for. I wanted them to find a way to make it work.

It was very well written and you feel like you know the characters and their surroundings. The author paints a picture that you are able to use your imagination to fill in the little details.

Excellent murder mystery!

I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Charlie McClung and Marion. A brilliantly written murder mystery. Ms. Edwards infused humor into the serious plot and sweet developing romance. She had me laughing several times within the first few pages. The plot had me engaged the entire time. This was a straight read through for me;, I didn't want to put the book down! A couple little twists near the end were unexpected. Great read, well edited, and worthy of a five star review.

BOY OH BOY here is a Wake Up for you this Morning !! It is Entitled " BRILLIANT DISGUISE: A CHARLIE MCCLUNG MYSTERY" it is written by MARYANNE EDWARDS. This is the very first time that I have read anything from this author . I had rec'd this book as an ARC from Ms Edwards in exchange for an honest opinion. And here is Mouisey's honest opinion of her book.
When I started reading the book from the very first page the author had my attention . She went straight into a murder - you find a neighbour by the name of Marion getting ready to take a bath when all of a sudden hears a scream and a gin shot. She rushes out her front door and finds the police next door at her friends house stating that she had committed suicide. Now Marion - knew her friend better than anyone and she didnt believe this at all. She went over to the officer and even told him that. The officer stated that he would take her statement later - Marion gave him her number and and she told him to call no matter what time it was. The husband walked out all in shock and the poor little girl ( the daughter ) well she just wanted her mom. Now what I haven't told you - is that there was another woman there on the scene with the man. Yes- it seems that Dianne and Dan always were fighting over the fact that Maggie hung out at there place to much with her husband Dan. But then again they always fought over money , drinking - well just about anything. When the Officer gets to call Marion later that night she tells him to come over and . He agrees they have coffee while he takes her statement -during the chat she tells him that she will not stop as she know that her dear friend was murder and did not commit suicide. He says that the chief has already taken control of the investigation. Marion begs Charlie to look into for her . He agrees. Before heading home he goes to the morgue where he finds the assistant ME . He informs him that Dianne was from what he sees was murdered - he agrees to send him a copy of his report hush like along with the drug study and the pictures. The next morning the ME files show up on his desk closing Dianne's death as a suicide. Now this is where I am going to leave you folks.... Because it gets really good here.. Exactly who did kill Dianne"" The chief of police?? The daughter?? The husband?? Maggie?? What is everyone hiding??? There is a Rat in the mix ..
With all the excitement going on in this story the way the characters are developed and played out the scenes. Everything is totally written supperly. I recommend this book to all readers. As for the rating I give it a 20 out of a 5 star rating . I look forward to reading more books written by Ms Edwards in the near future, NOW WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO FIND OUT HOW THIS ENDED !!! GO GET IT AT AMAZON NOW!!!

An exciting mystery with a nice dollop of romance! I do not read nearly enough mysteries and this one satisfied my craving!

Marion is an almost 50 widow living next door to a woman who has recently been found shot. Being an amateur detective, she is very interested in what happened and becomes involved with one of the new detectives in town. They are both surprised and upset when they learn that her neighbor's death has been ruled a suicide. They become closer as Marian deals with the emotions of losing her friend and with developing feelings for this new detective.

One of the things I liked about this book was that it felt very raw and genuine. What made this book special and unique to me was little things like how Marian would crack her knuckles or how McClung thought that Marian was going to be annoying at first. I really appreciated the omnipotent narration of the story because I liked knowing what everyone was thinking. And I really was guessing until almost the very end! There wasn't too much action until the last few pages (which I appreciate because I think sometimes authors stick that in as filler or something). I thought the romance sections were a little cheesy and wordy (they all like to talk a lot) but I think that is because I rarely read romance novels.

Overall, a good solid mystery!

Predictable. There is no need to rewrite the synopsis. I found the plot intriguing. However, the love sick widow and new detective story line was cheesy. This story provided a great combination of mystery, suspense and a little romance that kept the story moving and I was unable to put it down until the mystery was solved. I believed myself to be an amateur detective just like Miriam in the story but this mystery proved me wrong with the twists and turns that it took. There were things that I never expected to happen and I loved every minute of it. Charlie is the actual detective working the case. He is new to the town and a little disillusioned with romance. Miriam is the retired widow that is afraid to take a chance with her heart. There are several questions unanswered about the death of her husband and now with the death of her best friend Miriam is lost with how to proceed in her life. In a strange way they both need each other to solve the mystery and to heal their hearts. I loved the natural progression of the romance and the chemistry these two shared. I look forward to more mysteries and romance between these two.

This book has so much going for it I loved it from cover to cover. There was murder, romance, suspense, and put together for one great read. Charlie thought he was done being a detective, but life had other plans. He leaves everything he has known in a big city and even his family who is as close as they come for a chance in a town that is the opposite of everything he has known. Of course murder and crime happen everywhere, so Charlie begins his investigation where he meets Marian. Well from then on, there are sparks, although Marian and Charlie may fight them, each for their own reasons, but after all there is a crime to solve. I loved the way that you are drawn into the mystery and you are trying to solve the mystery right along with Charlie. I actually found myself trying to figure it out when I wasn't reading, thinking over the clues. This is a great read on a cold autumn or winter night. Loved it!

Marian is a normal woman who heard a the death of her friend and neighbor. She goes to try and figure out what is going on. While talking to the police she meets Mr Dreamy or Charlie McClung. They both feel the spark but refuse to admit it at first because of the circumstances.
Upon finding that she had lost another person, it really was a punch in the stomach.
The Chief said it was suicide but Marian is positive that her friend would never do that.
While charlie talks to her he realizes that what she is saying makes alot of sense an that he is not sure what is going on.
The supporting cast was awesome. I loved Marian. The story is set in the 80's. I was so surprised how this story is written with such a strong and smart leading women. Charlie is a great male lead. Very sweet and a great person.
Such a great mystery novel. I loved all these character and can not wait to read more. This is such an easy smooth read. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Unsure how to rate

I'm at a bit of a loss on how to rate this book. On the one hand the mystery was pretty solid. I was pretty sure I knew who the killer was, but was proven wrong in the end. I like a story that keeps you on your toes. On the other hand there were some pretty awful characters in this book. Not sure if disliking them simply makes this a well written book or a poor one.

Between the manipulative six year old repeatedly described as hateful, the abused but stupid wife, and the character described as ugly and alone I was a little underwhelmed. Even the heroine with all the crying was a bit much. The two redeeming characters were the hero and the best friend.

The conspiracy could have been developed just a bit more also.

In short, I liked the mystery but everything else kind of fell short for me.

It was very refreshing to read a book that had mystery, a blooming love interest, and a very determined woman in her late 40's. Marian is nearing 50, as being near 50'ish myself, I loved that about this book. Mary Anne Edwards has written a very good story. It stands on the story alone. Goes to show that you don't always have to have explicit sex scenes to have a good book. I really enjoyed this story, so much so that I am going to go straight to A Good Girl, book 2 in this series. OH BTW, even though this is a series, it most certainly can be read as a stand alone. I highly recommend.
